Mama Sheila's House Of Soul is a family-owned and operated restaurant in the heart Minneapolis. Husband and wife Frederick and Sheila started the business in 2016 and have been going strong ever since. They moved the eatery to the current location, on the corner of Bloomnington Ave and E 38th Street on the border of the Powderhorn and Bancroft sections of the city in 2018.
Sheila, who also serves as the main cook, grew up in Chicago. Starting off in the kitchen at 15 years old, she developed a love for cooking and the skills to cook. She served as the lead cook in her church community and crafted up food for many occasions, most of them large events. Her first venture was a deli that she opened, where customers enjoyed the food so much they encouraged her to open a sit-down type of restaurant, which is now Mama Sheila's where she continues to produce great mouth-watering soul food!
Frederick is a man who has many skills which span construction and design skills which came to him as a general contractor. Additionally, his leadership skills that he acquired as a pastor leading congregations for over 20 years are key to keeping the family business running smoothly. His craftsmanship is what puts customers and diners into an elegant environment which is a mix of a muesum-like atmosphere with photos and murals of prominent Black Americans — past and present — and regal decor with comfortable and intimate seating.
Together, Frederick, Sheila, and their awesome and familial staff make Mama Sheila's House Of Soul a dining experience of delicous and soul-warming food in the ambience of Black culture and history presented in extreme elegance.
